One of the worse things I hate about winter is getting WET.

I don't mind so much the cold, I have plenty of clothes I can layer and wrap up from the cold.

Is it possible to kit me out with £100 and waterproof me from head to toe, so I can go out and do my horses and not come home wet?

Suggestions please?

Sorry OP - if you want to be 100% waterproof you are going to have to stay indoors!

But more seriously - check out technical clothing at something like Sports Direct. You'll get wet - but you will also dry out quickly. Sometimes the problem with waterproof stuff is that if you get damp inside you stay damp. And get cold. If you have good modern technical type clothing you'll dry out faster and stay warmer.

look at somewhere like ARCO - the waterproof over trousers from there are brilliant as are their high vis coats and a fraction of the price of what you find in 'equestrian' shops.

my big yellow coat comes almost down to my knees (it's great for riding in as well) and because I got a XL (I'm a size 12) I can fit loads of layers underneath. The waterproof trousers are wide enough to go over my boots (again ace for riding as no water can run down my riding boots) so the only thing that gets damp when I'm doing jobs is my head and I don't mind that.

LOL - what a fabulous idea Shay - I can't remember what it's like to NOT have horses and have that option. I think you are right, some of the waterproof gear I've had makes me damp inside then I get cold so by the time I get home I'm feeling cold and wet!

I just looked on Sports Direct - stretch waterproof trousers - hey now heres a start!

Now what about a hat? Whats' best in all weathers?

I like long coats rather than a short jacket plus over trousers. I have just bought a target dry outback coat and have been in some rain that was really lashing down and I was dry! Teamed with waterproof gloves, my cheapo B&Q wellies (which are lasting far better than more expensive brands) and a hat (my gelding likes to pull the pop off hood off *sigh*) and I'm ready to face the elements.

ETA - my hat is an old Mountain Horse trapper style one and it's fab. This seem to be the current similar one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SALE-Moun...hash=item338f210c3a:m:m32fTNzVR6LShQggFarHZ8g

Try the long riding coats from Rydale (the ones with the cape over the shoulders). They are totally waterproof and my first one lasted about 10 years. They only cost about £40 too. The only issue with mine is that I am short so bought the shorter version which doesn't have leg straps. If you are tall enough to wear the long one you'll be fine, otherwise you will need waterproof trousers to ride in.

Lidl's range of waterproof jackets/trousers are surprisingly good. Only downside: not always available, and don't breathe well at all (i.e. you steam up from the inside). I've come to the conclusion that if you want both - water proof and breathable - you'll have to shell out big money. I've just bit the bullet (after years of making do with cheaper stuff) and bought myself a proper goretex jacket. The difference while poo picking was amazing - even though I got hot, I didn't end up feeling like I was in the sauna! For trousers, I find that breathe-ability isn't that important. I complete my water proof kit with a pair of short muck boot type short boots (Grubs brand, with proper tread).
I'm afraid with the new goretext jacket, that puts me way over your budget though. But for waterproof on a budget, I'd keep an eye out for the next Lidl event.

I got one of these for £5 for my fiancee for christmas - not used it yet but I also got a waterproof coat for me in the same material which is great, flexible and very waterproof. Mine is yellow, his is navy, but you can't go wrong for the price - if they had smaller suits then I would have got myself a couple, one to wear and one to dry so there was always a dry one to put on.

I got fed up with paying out lots for horsey stuff that leaked on the second wear, so I went Army surplus. :D I have desert camo, so should stand out in all the pink mud around here!

Cost less than £50 for jacket (with a hood big enough to fit over a hat) and trousers, totally waterproof and no steaming up either.

Local farmer uses three bin liners and two Tesco's carrier bags. Cuts three holes in one bin liner for his head and both arms; one hole in each of the other liners for his legs...fastened with length of baling twine around waist. One carrier bag in each boot. :( Add whatever other clothing desired, but in the knowledge it will get wet....as will your skin through sweat, but hey ho! Can't convince him otherwise and 'gifts' are ignored.

Yes, Sports Direct is very good! They do horse stuff but the general stuff is probably just as effective and cheaper.

Lots of lovely suggestions and bargains too! The only thing I don't like about some waterproof gear is the "noise" of it rustling, and have decided it's best to definitely go for Breathable this time, as we have it so mild with the rain, I get too hot.

The "all in one" idea is great, much better than two pieces in torrential weather.

Are the Rydale jackets breathable? Or do you get sweaty wearing them please?

My long wax riding coat keeps me much drier and less ' steamy' than a jacket and over trousers. Maybe worth keeping an eye out for second hand/sales. Afraid I've got no idea how much they are as mine was a hand me down.
