Having just made the switch from synthetic saddles (and bridles, breastplates, etc etc)that I have never had to worry about getting a good soaking from a slosh bottle or two, I had a sudden thought - what do I do with a leather saddle if I ride when it's raining? Will it get badly damaged? Should I use a ride on saddle cover? Or can I protect it with something?

I'm not talking slosh bottle protection by the way, we're kind of retired from endurance, just rain!

i used to have one but it made the saddle slippery, especially when wet. I hated it. so now I resign myself to the fact my lovely saddle will get wet and i will just have to clean/treat it!

Most are next to useless - I use covers from this ebay shop for saddle fitting appointments that have to be in the rain - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/HELENS-HOOVES-AND-PAWS?_trksid=p4340.l2563 - they are properly rubberised (I think) waterproof in their construction, and have a soft backing for the saddle side. They are narrow at the back so if you have a wide seated saddle definitly size up - I use the large for up to 17" saddles at the most, and the XL for 17.5".

I have a leather saddle cover which is amazing it takes a true soaking to touch the saddle, however it belonged to my mum so it is 40+ years old and now feeling it age, if you can find one they are worth their weight in gold. Also have a regular nylon type one which is really good not slippy and really waterproof, can find out the brand if needed.

Thank you all very much. I've decided to go for one as the woods we ride through can be a bit overgrown at times so am worried about scratches, it was also from eBay and is very similar to the one you use sbloom, but has fleece lining under the seat -hopefully it won't be too slippy!
