You are going to think I am mad and mean but hey ho
Can I rub lard into the top of my horses rug to reproof it.It is in good condition but leaks like a sieve.
Any other suggestions welcome.
I used to do this with the old canvas ones

no not lard! must be special wax/or waterproofing gunk You can get this at any camp shop and any outdoor, coat or boot type shop, or maybe a good footwear store. lard can actually dissolve some waterproofing, in the same way that vaseline can erode a hole into a condom! BEWARE!

I used to use vaseline, tubs of the stuff on my rugs. it worked just fine for me.

Whack on great blobs, rub it on with a sponge and then go over it with a hairdryer (makes your kitchen smell wonderful!

) Did it with all my ancient Barbour coats as well and it worked just the same as the expensive wax.

Never heard of lard being rubbed on rugs, but I do know people who coats their horses backs and legs with it! More or less the same really.

LOL. Vaseline? Condoms? fancy that

You can buy Rugproof in bottles for both synthetic and canvas rugs (different types for each). You can dilute it in some hot water and paint it on the leaky bits...if you use a big paintbrush it doesn't take more than a few minutes.
If it is just the seams you could use Nikwax stuff for proofing leather boots etc...but I think it's quite dear.
