My very elderly horse has developed some bladder weakness so his back legs are getting quite wet. I've been applying udder cream every morning to provide a waterproof barrier and I cover his legs overnight for waterproofing and warmth.

Have just seen the post further down about pig oil and am wondering if it might be better than the udder cream? Would it waterproof his legs enough and would it need applying less often and be cheaper?

as he is a boy doesnt he pee forward? or does he now have liquid pooh? if liquid pooh is the problem i would stick on a pre/pro biotic and grease him up! and clean daily!

Vaseline just falls off - must have a melting temp lower than body temp!! Liquid paraffin is brilliant and stays on longer than pig oil. Or at least it does when I'm keeping mud at bay. Not sure about wee!

Years ago we used to use lard and 'flowers of sulphur ' mixed together. Flowers of sulphur from garden centres is a yellow powder which is antibacterial and antifungal. Mixed with lard it gives a waterproofing effect. We used to do our horses on a sunday afternoon and repeat the following sunday.

Best thing ever, use on my mares white sock, she lives out and is prone to mud fever but never gets it now as i apply this once a week and NOTHING gets through.

Buy it from boots.
