Evening all,

As the title suggests... Does anyone know if its possible to waterproof a tweed jacket?

I have some of the wash in waterproofing nix wax things but I kno you can buy sprays etc too.

Anyone tried it?

Nikwax T X Direct is the wash in waterproofing but it would only work if your jacket is washable. Most tweed isn't. You could try looking to see if they do a product aimed at fabric walking boots and trainers, that might work. But a good heavy tweed should be pretty waterproof due to the thickness of the fabric and tightness of the weave.

Nikwax and Grangers do spray on products that you can use. Used them and they work well.

Go into a decent outdoor shop and the staff should be able to help you.

If your jacket is wool, then please do not spray it with silicone based waterproofer, it will ruin it! Wool can be waterproofed with oil, but it is usually oiled prior to it being woven or knitted. One way of getting oiled wool is to not entirely strip the oil out of the raw wool, but then you cannot dye it. If you can source some lanolin (the oil in wool) you may be able to spray the jacket with it, and so make it waterproof.

Thanks for your replies all!

I should have mentioned its not an expensive tweed! Just a shires tweed which is 40% well. No super expensive jackets will be harmed in this experiment ;)

Just checked the label and it is actually washable but may try to spray options... Will toddle off to mountain warehouse tomorrow.

Any other advice appreciated though. Thanks!
