My mare foaled on Thursday. The birth went very well, and then after 4 hours, she still hadn't passed the placenta, so I rang the vet and they came and injected her to have some more (strong) contractions, which worked and she passed it. They came back in the morning to check her, but decided to not wash her out.
Yesterday morning, the foal has a small amount of yellow sticky in his eyes, and the mare had some watery, blood tinted discharge all down her back legs that had been slowly dripping out all night. It is not puss, and does not smell at all. She is eating, drinking, and does not look in any discomfort.
Today, the foal looks fine, is feeding well, active, shiny and perky. The mare still has a slow drip of the same fluid. No better, but no worse.
Can this be expected after retaining the placenta, and having an internal examination etc after giving birth? Any advice would be appreciated.
