Waxoyl underbody seal for truck/car

So yesterday, after a saga of someone ordering the wrong part for truck then taking forever to get new part and get the job done (resulting in lost MOT slots and no lorry for nearly 3 months) Maude the Merc sailed through her plating yesterday. We were resigned to selling her but the nice VOSA ATF man was so impressed with her condition at her age that he said we'd be mad-so we are swithering again, especially as with new shocks and slave cylinder she's driving so nicely.

He said though that we should get some waxoyl on underneath-tbh we were wanting my car done as well, apart from all the salt on the roads in Scotland in the winter, both vehicles are driven through cattle farms regularly (the car up to 6 times a day). Is this fairly straightforward to do ourselves with ramps? Any idea how much it might cost at a garage?

Not a clue on costs but we found that waxoyl peeled off after a short while. Now we spray old sump oil everywhere and road dust ect sticks to it and protects the vehicle. When MOT or plating comes round it is all power washed off and renewed once tested. This has kept the old land rover and trailers happy for 20+ years.

My defender and truck where done .
It’s was expensive a lot of the cost being in the cleaning of the undersides of the vehicles before they applied it .
Definatly worth it my defender is 18 .
MrGS ‘s defender was done before it had ever been on a road .

Waxoyl is cheap. I think about £4 for 500ml. I did the trailer with it and used one pot. I did any bare metal on the underside and all round the chassis when I had the floor up. Its not a difficult job, just messy. No idea what a garage would charge, but I bet its not £4!

You have to be sure it is as clean as possible before you waxoyl - if you don't it will peel off. We did the new Deffender ourselves with a power washer and it cost about £10 for the waxoyl. Makes a mess off your clothes though!

thanks-they do a spray applicator thing which might be worthwhile if I do truck as well. I have overalls

My partner does his vehicles himself, he mixes it with old engine oil to get a better consistency to apply

You will need the overalls it’s extremely messy.

My guy said to spray the underneath of my lorry would be around £ 300 - £ 400

my defender was done, cannot remember the cost, but it was steam cleaned and then I think 2 coats were applied. It was definitely worth it. I suspect you would do a much better job getting into all the little bits if it was properly cleaned underneath and then put on a garage ramp to wax oil it.

Car has to be very clean and very dry underneath, otherwise the waxoyl doesn't stick and water will get into the gaps and rot the car. Waxoyl properly applied is good stuff. There's a competitor product called Buzzweld. And many people just paint used sump oil underneath their car. Waxy oils will stick/last better than sump oil which being more liquidy is more likely to move, fall off and pollute the ground surfaces it touches.
