I’m planning to buy a really nice WB/Sports horse type mare at the end of next year and I will be looking for a unbacked or just started 3/4 year old with good conf & paces and hopefully good but not world class breeding, ok so here is the question for you how much do I need to get together to get something like this? Where would you recommend I start looking? UK or abroad? I would consider placing a deposit on younger horse any one had any experience with this? (I will have next years foal & a mare to sell first)

How long is a piece of string regarding the price....you could be looking for something I would think from £4-5k+ for something of good quality (unless you find a bargain which may be possible).

I would be recommending you looking in the UK first as there are so many good quality stud farms in the UK. You could look through the breed association websites, and also look at the Futurity catalogues because there were several of those horses for sale.

You could go abroad but the euro is not great just now, so the value against the pound is not great.

All depends on what you are looking for.

I was thinking I will need at least 5-6k realistically especially if the private sales market starts to pick up again next spring. Thanks for posts so far any one planning on attending any of the young sports horse auctions on the continent would be going along just to get some ideas of lines I like probably could not afford to buy unless I can double my budget at least

mines on horsemart! have had some enquiries so price should be about right. the 3yo by revenge w (Animo). just to give you some idea, she should make a good sj on national / county circuit inc. age classes, she has no hang ups but is a little immature. there are some good horses over here, as previous post, the pound v euro is poor at the mo, not so good for going abroad :-( depends what level you want to compete at i guess!

Sorry for hijack but I think I saw a post recently about visiting the sales next year, a sort of HHO 's trip. I think Stacey Tanglewood might be worth a PM to see.

If you want to buy a youngster with good bloodlines, Henk has a got a wide range (35+ horses) in his sale on the 7th of September if you fancy a trip down south. See the Renkum Stud website for their number to get a catalogue.
