I read in one of this months horse mags that you can use WD40 to prevent snow buildup under hooves. Has anyone used this? Does it work and would it be harmful to the sole? I've tried everything else last year with no joy:(

Haven't tried it, when mare was shod last year I tried vaseline and it worked for about 10 seconds!! I wouldn't put WD40 on hooves tbh - if I get it on my hands I wash it off, so I wouldn't leave it on a horse either!! Mare is now barefoot and I hear that snow bunching up in their hooves just isn't a prob. Hope it's true as I would love a snowy ride!!

the yard i worked at used WD40 on hooves in the snow. (some of their practices were a bit :/ though) and one of the women had natural balance shoes and never had a problem.

the barefoot cobs around us have no probs with it in winter Glosgirl so you may be right.

My mare is barefoot behind and doesn't get snow stilts in them. Her fronts are shod though and we get huge stilts that don't break away. Having her barefoot on front isn't an option and after the snow we had last year I don't fancy her stuck in the stable for 2 weeks again.
