Evening all.

My OH and I (and Chloe) are looking for a labrador puppy. Our requirements are (in this order):

FULLY HEALTH TESTED. I need to know as many hip scores as physically possible back through the breeding. I need to know elbow scores, eye scores, you name it, I need it. Ideally, they will have litters that are proven to be fine (and it would be fab if we could meet some of the litter although this is obv a bit unlikely in some cases!).

LABRADOR.

YELLOW.

SOUTH WEST. (or commutable distance).

We will not be in a position to bring said puppy home until May/June/July at the earliest. Therefore, we are looking at putting our names down on lists most likely.

If anyone knows of anything with this criteria, let me know.

Also, as a side note, would any sane breeders let us have a puppy checked out by a vet before we took it home.....??

Can you tell we're paranoid

Hannah xx

Good luck in your hunt. :)

Just to say, I would leave it for a bit longer after Chloe's surgery to see how she goes. No doubt the young pup will be very bouncy and she may not appreciated being jumped on if she's sore :)

Harley was checked by his breeders vet the day before he came home and in the sale contract it stated we had to get him checked by our vet within 24 hrs of collection and notify the breeder of any problems immediately

no idea if that is standard...

Thanks Puppy =] she has had the op now and got signed off by the vet today to start her rehab - swimming and walking. It took her 3 and a half months to fully recover (like, back to running around full pelt off the lead last time), so even May would be (counts on fingers) 4 months and ideally we could leave it later than that.

Galaxy thanks for that tis interesting. xx

I had this in my puppy contracts too.

Your best bet is to contact the breed clubs and get a list of decent breeders, and then just do your research. It is possible to check a dogs hip and elbow score on the KC website, and has been said before, do ask to see score sheets not just take breeders word for it.

As above, my pup was checked the morning of the day he came home, and it was contracted that I would have him checked by my own vet within 3 days. I'm not sure if any long term problems could realistically be picked up with a pup that age, but it does give peace of mind for general health/weight/virus/nasties.

Can't help at all with finding a litter, but assuming you're going for a breeder that health tests so they should be able to point you in the right direction for checking hip scores etc through the lines?

Good luck :)

Well, ya see, if the KC would allow/facilitate for printing hip scores of all ancestors on pedigrees like they do on..the continent...with dogs...of a certain persuasion...it would be easier for puppy buyers, wouldn't it?!

Sorry, that's another fight for another day :p there's a couple of big online databases where we can see health test results but I am not sure if that exists for labs? Although as MM says, the KC do have records too.

You're just down the rode from me, im Tewkesbury :) We wont be breeding our labs again for a year or two when we want another one to show, and we dont have yellows either, but I would suggest you contact Carol and David Coode (Warringah's affix), they are wonderful breeders, they have dual champion dogs and have all three colours. Check out their website:

Thank you guys I'll take a note of that name.

Thing is I just don't trust the hip scoring system anymore. Thats why I'm so keen so to see the generations past and present as I think its gotta show me better how that hip score has been maintained etc.

The colour to me is alot less important than having a healthy pup.

Xxxx

I can understand how you feel about the hip scoring Flamehead, I have had the odd kick in the teeth too, but it is all we have currently , however you are right to check back in pedigrees, siblings etc. What actually were Chlo's parents scores?
Should add the KCs lists aren't infallible either, there is a list on another forum of supposedly all GSD scores over the last 20+ years , I know of quite a few breeders, including myself, who have scored animals who are not on the list.
