Am I the only person who didn't immediately jump to the conclusion that the vet had to be wrong and barefoot was the only answer? Glad you took the sensible option and TALKED to your vet. You pay for his expertise, and part of that means you can ask questions if you are unclear.

Yup. Well done!

I still think boots and pads would be a better answer in an ideal world, but not for this owner in this situation, who needs the support of her vet and farrier to help her through this.

I was thinking I would go ahead with the plans for diet changes and maintenance of hooves in the meantime since I will still be aiming for the healthiest hooves he can have. Will ask re the cushings tests next week just in case. He is definitely not overweight at the moment, not being a biased mum - ribs slightly visable and easily felt - but will ask vet for a second opinion just to be sure.

Your vet will probably quibble about the tests but they can't hurt. A friend of mine was just struggling with the last 10% of footiness in her 10 year old, that showed no other signs at all, and it came back positive, much to her vet's suprise. Another friend has just had a positive on a brood mare, who also has no other symptoms than footie feet.

PM Oberbaubles and she'll give you her pre-prepared feeding manual :D !!!
