Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd post this as there are frequently posts about the RoR classes on here.

We went to Heathfield Show today and did the RoR Challenge class. This was meant to be a round of jumps followed by an individual show incorporating specific movements (serpentine etc). Obviously the judges had different plans and it turned out to be a round of jumps then the judge rode (although it specifically said this would not happen in the schedule and on the RoR site ), then a strip off and trot up. We had also been very hung up on getting the right tack, right turnout etc, but nobody at all was interested and there was a real selection in the class. I guess this depends on venue?

Anyhow, Alfie was once again a dream and behaved very well despite all the show attractions around him (marquees, inflatables, motorbike display teams and much to his horror horses in harness). He jumped a beautiful clear round, and was well behaved for the judge, and was pulled in 3rd much to our delight :D

As a side thought - what do you lot think of it when you enter a class specified as one thing and then it is changed to something else?

So, here are some pics for you - sorry for overload. We have qualified for the Royal Windsor Show as far as I can make out :)

firstly well done. secondly, he looks HUGE! how big is he????
thirdly, no i wouldnt be happy if it said judge would not ride, then they did. suppose you have to prepare for every eventuallty tho!!

Thank you guys! He's approx 17.2hh, aged 8. The rider is only about 5ft3 so it makes him look bigger, and at the moment he's all front - got some catching up to do behind but we are working on it.

Incidentially - any suggestions of what to feed him to bulk him up a bit (and perhaps get a bit more oomph)? He is very fit and doing BE and riding club etc and eats like a pig but just doesn't pile on the pounds.

He is a lovely chap. Is he jump bred?

How much haylage will he eat? I usually just shovel mine full of haylage to fatten them up. If that doesn't quite cut it I then ply them with calm and condition and unmollased alfa A. Works for me but I'm not an expert! Plus mine are butter balls on all the grass we have at the moment so I've sort of forgotten about fattening them up :)

I have just put mine onto baileys performance balancer to help with his muscle development but it is not supposed to whizz up. Maybe have a look at some of the feed balancers on offer?

Your boy looks really lovely! congratulations..

He is absolutely beautiful. Well done to you!
I'm currently feeding my TB mare on readymash extra twice a day - she has gone from looking anorexic to verging on overweight in about 3-4 weeks and has a fab gloss to her coat. Good luck with everything you do with him.

He looks fab! Well done you must be very pleased!

I know it's been around for ages but the only thing that keeps the weight on my boy is baileys no1.

Well done! I was watching your class and thought your boy looked great - he is very eyecatching! Must say I thought the standard was high this year.

Thanks TGM! We'd never even watched a class so didn't no what to expect standard wise. We were happy with our result - the first two were fab. Would have been nice to say hello to a fellow HHo-er if I'd known!

Benson21: What was Donovan doing? Was he in the same class?! It was windy and cold - we headed home straight afterwards without even spending money on unnecessary and useless stuff from trade stands - never thought I'd see the day :-0

ooo no, Donovan is only a little pony! He was doing the sec B in hand. In the ring for 10 mins, then in the box and home! Although I did sneak into one of only 2 tack stands and managed to buy something that I definately 'needed' !!!

What an absolute beauty, well done. Fantastic uphill canter, what a peach.:D

As an aside how do you find out which shows host RoR classes?

Thanks Dab, we only found out as we were looking through the show schedule for something to take any of ours to and it was the only class we were eligible for! However, take a look here:

its the official RoR website with a diary etc.

Not so sure about being jump bred but defo racing bred. His dad was Cloudings whose dad was Saddlers Wells, and his mum was Storming Lady whose dad was Strong Gale. We have Alfie's full brother too -although he's bay and just totally jaw droppingly handsome in my eyes (I could eat him for breakfast and stare at him all day, basically I'm totally smitten with him :D)

I haven't tried haylage (feel stupid saying that after everything I have tried). I know he was on it at the racing yard but we haven't had it on our yard as none of them have needed anything different but will look into it, thanks.
