We nearly lost our Fell yearling to colic yesterday we don't what has caused it. He has been wormed regularly and has had 2 clear egg counts including one yesterday but the vets say that it could still be worms. Because of the mild weather the immature worms are migrating earlier and obviously they don't lay eggs and so don't show up on an egg count. So please be extra vigilant with your worming and also noting any unusual behaviour like lying down in the field as that is how we first noticed it.

My 21 yr old was same about 17 mths ago. Ended up in Newmarket for 3 days, he had also had nil counts n was v high n weather conditions a possible cause. Fields always clear and only horse. Now even more careful with him. The young & old are more susceptible.

having lost one pony to colic, and my lami mare who is box rested had a blood test done becaue she got spasmodic colic and is/was loosing protein so much that swellings under belly of fluid. Blood test came back and she had medium count tape worm equestparamox

I would ask vet to do a tape worm blood test to rule it out.

I understand that you need to worm count for stronglyes but as the count will not show encysted redworm, I wormed in November, this should have cleared the system of encysted and others. I asked wormers-on-line for their advice, and used one which had two active ingredients, it is always better to use a special worming program for youngsters, as they are always more susceptible.

Thank you for your replies he was wormed for tapeworm had equest and 5 day panacur guard and 2 low worm counts prior to colicking. I think because he is young he was just more susceptible. Thankfully he seems to have made a full recovery but we won't relax for ages yet, if ever.
