We seem to have a spotted Palomino

It is loseing its winter coat turning dark palomino with white spots. Its a Shetland by the way. Are they unusual? It looks like an apaloosa palomino with white spots. She is a real cutie.
I tried to get a photo but batteries died. Will get one tommorrow

I would like to pinch her. Realy tempted to take her to a show but can't as i don't know the owner

My little shetland is dun with black and white spots, a dorsal stripe, and a bright blue eye. He was rescued from a really nasty dealer in Surrey as a little tiny foaly who was an absolute hat rack, covered in cuts etc and terrified of people. He is now the biggest thug at the yard and stands up to Steves 2 big eventers! He has a posh horse life now and gets to go on the horse walker while i muck out, comes in to a nice stable at night, and keeps my ltitle mare company in her turn out paddock. I should have sold him when my little mare died, but I couldn't face losing him too, especially as miniatures dont always end up in the best place. Sorry went off on a bit of a tangent!

WOW i have never seen one with those markings. What a lovely story. I like to hear stories of other peoples horses/ponies. I am terrible for rambling about ours.

He's great. Some will think he is ugly, others will adore him, but he is my little man =D He used to go out with a massive 17.3 called Harley who used to be a big bully, and Monty would run up and bite his knees so Harley would kneel down and Monty would run away "laughing", Harley never came near him haha.
 
we have similar goings on with our mini!! he was cream when born, dark eyes, then eyes turned bluey, and he went cream appy with spots on bum..

This year he has decided to go palamino with roan legs and creamy mane and tail, its gorgeous but not sure what he will end up as!!

Dad was appy mum was palamino!
 
We had a registered miniature palomino yearling colt with ...wait for it....very dark brown leopard spots ..never seen it before in my life, nor should it of had spots seen as it was a registered Shetland!!! and bought from a well known breeder! but he was in very poor condition when we got him and his coat was so long and thick that there were not noticeable until his summer coat started coming though and he got older. We contact the breeder and asked what had gone on there seen as there was no history of any spotties on his pedigree..quite rightfully so. He didn't believe us and wanted to come and take a look, which we said..come and see for yourself, well he couldn't beleive his eyes and wanted to buy him back ...surprisingly enough, we bought him for a potential Shetland stallion so obviously this would of been out of the question breeding with him unless registering him with another society, but decided to run him on and show him and still the breeder wanted him back. My only guess is that breeder who was known for breeding palominos picked him up and did a bit fiddling with the papers...naughty naughty but yes sorry totally strayed from the point, you can get spotted palomino's, if someone says its impossible...its not! some times they can be mistaken for iron markings but you can cetainly tell the differece between those and leopord spots that are all over the body!

I have been given a shetland who I though was an ordinary chestnut although she had a sort of mealy muzzle, belly and flanks which I thought unusual. Now she has almost lost all her coat she's gone a strange colour. She's still chestnut on her back but her belly and flanks are silvery and she has pale spots between her front legs and at the top of her back legs. She also has a few white spots in various places on her chestnut bits..

God knows, all I know is there were the same spots as a leopord spot and the breeder agree'd that he was spotted, I was as baffled as everyone else...I'll see if I can dig out some pitcures of him on Thursday night, you can decide for yourselves...freaky!

My chestnut arab gets dark spots on his coat every summer. Now I know what they are called...Bendor, after a TB who had them called Bend Or (just looked it up). Cheers!!
 
Aren't horse colours fascinating?My mini shetland,who is my horse pictured belows' best friend is very similar to Honeypots' shetland..silvery in parts and a very silvery undercoat.I have tried to learn about the dilute colours etc , i have a leopard spot appie too,but there are so many potential colours it's mind boggling.
There is a colour research project on the go, the appaloosa project, there is lots of info on colour genes on there but it's pretty in depth and after a long day it just doesn't totally go in to my brain!My mare is a clydesdale x appie, obviously carries the blagdon colouring from the clydesdale,with characteristic appie colouring, striped feet and mottled skin as well.She has a silvery flaxen mane and tail,creamy silvery body, blagdon strawberry roan patches,rich brown marks on her legs and lots of dark brown spots..
In years to come I would dearly love a foal from her to keep,I'm a vet nurse so no problems there, just to choose what to put her to is far from clear!
