So, after lots of practice runs of keeping mum and foal apart, my mare went off to a stud yesterday and left her foal. I was expecting a lot of drama but it was much better than expected. Mum loaded and went away without any hysterics (I used a transporter), travelled quietly and was calm, not calling and not sweated up when I saw her in the evening. I put the companion foal in with my foal in the stable with grilles over inside doors and outside doors shut. A little bit of calling but no rushing around, a quiet night and turned out this morning without so much as a whinny and no rushing around the field. Phew!! What a relief.
