If you've been following my last post you'll see I've stumbled across a pony problem, not my own i might add...

Said pony wasn't weaned until 18months, does this mean that it won't be as mentally mature as other horses it's own age as am adult horse? Is it likely to cause problems with breaking etc?

Not sure - were the mare and foal in a herd situation, or on there own? Is there any reason why you are asking the question? Is there any behaviour or issues that you are wondering about?.

I would not think the weaning age would be a problem, as much as how it has been handled, and what it has been exposed to.

Should not cause a problem. Both my fillies stayed with their mum until over 1 year, were weaned and then back to the herd with mum. No problems with breaking or separation issues, in fact probably over confident if anything due to not having anything bad happen to them and spending their whole life as part of a secure herd.

The only problem with it is that they tend to be more horse, if you get my meaning. Humans are less important to them as they always have put the mare first.

The more horse they are, the more sceptical they are of your ideas, you need to be good at the game with horses reared like this, thats all.

Thank you pale rider. You more or less summed up my thoughts with words. And thank you for your input on my other post.

Brilliant explanation! Makes absolute sense. I love this forum, I feel like I learn a bit more every day!
