Just wanted to urge people to try and wear a hat when they lead their horse. Today my OH was leading one of my horses from one field to another, he was a bit wound up in the wind so I insisted he wore a hat. Now, i dont always wear a hat when i lead the horses about but will if i think they may be silly. I am now going to try and wear one all the time when leading.
Basically the horse swung his head twice and if it wasnt for the hat there would have been a broken nose and probably concussion. The horse hit my OH on his forehead, very hard. Luckily the hat stopped him making contact with the bridge of the nose.

So, instead of a husband refusing to help ever again luckily the hat just resulted in a bit of swearing and me having a bit more respect for my head

I think its very sensible. Especially as I looked round to see a playful filly waving her front legs at me yesterday

In her defence all the horses were hooning round and she joined in - just a little closer to me than I would have liked

Mrs M- Im sure many people dont wear hats when they lead but im hoping even just a couple of people may think about it. OH thanks you for your thoughts!

JP- ive never heard of that as a yard rule before. Good idea though

EM- i made him wear a hat because of the feet, i never actually thought it would be the horses head that did the braining!

PIB- yes, it was a sharp reminder of the fact they can be dangerous. And he is feeling lucky! Lottery ticket this week maybe?!

My skull cap goes on the moment I arrive on the yard, and doesn't come off until I've finished. My big boy is a rig and a bit bolshy, and my fjord pulls like a train. Have never contemplated not wearing it riding, leading, grooming or on the quad bike. I work in a hospital, and can confirm you only get one chance at a head! lol

I often wear my hat in the field, especially if its windy & I think they may fool around.
When they were at livery it was a rule, & I've kept it up.
Had comments made though, as to why I was wearing it, from a friend's non-horsey OH who thinks he knows it all. Afterall, handlers at the start in racing wear them.
