Hello

I did mention in on a post in SY but no has has replied, so I thought I'd try in here.

I share Charisma who lives at home with her owner, but I live a couple of hundred yards down the lane. Her owner works full time (as do I, but I only work down the road) so I've taken it upon myself to go to the yard every evening and most mornings.

Normally C is out from 8am - 5.30pm every day. Haylage has been put out for her and her mate, Harry, but she has hardly touched it. Looks to me like she would rather wander about the field looking sorry for herself and pick at blades of grass. Now this worries me because she does tend to lose weight in the Winter :(

She is quite a fussy eater and I am wondering if I should bring her in on my lunch break (2-3pm) just while this cold snap lasts. At least then maybe she'll be more inclined to eat the haylage?

I will suggest a visit from the Dentist, although she does eat her concentrate apart from a few bits at the bottom of her bucket.

Also, I don't know if this means anything, but when I went to see her this lunchtime she started walking up to me but then stopped and looked like she was having a wee. But she didn't wee?! :(

I don't want to worry but she looked so miserable!

Hi Jen,

Try not to worry, I think you’d have known about it if she did have colic, she’s perhaps just a bit fed up of the cold and the stupid snow covering up her yummy grass!!

I’m sure she’ll be ok but you could try bringing her in a bit earlier if you think it might make you both a bit happier.

Is she eating her haylage when she is in? If she is not eating a lot of haylage in the stable either, then I would definitely get a dental check done. Horses with dental problems often cope fine with bucket feed, but struggle with long fibre such as hay and haylage.

Yes she does, although she doesn't eat a full net and take small bits :) She's never been a ravenous eater though!

Definetly looking to get the dentist out soon - thanks for your reply

Thanks Sarah, I do worry :( Just when sh'e not happy she's not exactly one to let you know about it, but prefers to stay quiet and act all depressed. LOL sound like I'm talking a person!

Yeah probably just bored with no grass. I can understand that :)

If she is still struggling to wee tom then you could maybe ask the vet for advice. Sounds like it could be a urinary tract infection. Apparently mares are more prone to them, and again they are more prone to them in cold weather.

Just a thought.
