Last year's foals have thick wooly coats and access to two big barns with ad lib haylage. they are split into two groups, the fillies and colts and rarely mix.
One Venus has been rugged since November as she has a fine coat, the others I haven't bothered, but the two boys have started grazing and not going inside the barns at all, not sure why, they don't appear to be bullied, but I am worried they will drop weight.
So today invested in two Weatherbeta rugs for them, guessed at 4' 6" and hope they will fit, now to bring them inside, dry them off and turn them out knowing at least they can't get soaked anymore! I plan to thatch their backs with some hay so their chances of rainrash will be minimised until they dry out completely. (the hay just drops out over a day or so)
We must have over fifty rugs here between all the horses , some just thrive better without them, but they have to be those that use the shelters a lot or like the min shetland, get tucked up under a holly tree with a wall to keep out the wind and remain bone dry despite the rain. Of course size 4' 6" is a size I just didn't have a spare of at all...
Also bought CCJ some Dublin pull on joddies as they have proved hard wearing and comfy, and husband some Dublin breeches.. so I sneaked off to ASDA and bought a couple of fleeces fro me at £2 each what a bargain....
