Spoke to one of the Masters today re joining them for some mounted hound excersise next week in preparation for Autumn Hunting.

We traditionally start on the Aug bank holiday, but she thinks it will have to be delayed this year as the farmers are still struggling to get in their harvest.

I totally understand the reasons why, but this summer has just been one frustration after another....

Anyone else's pack in the same boat?

What New the Cubbing Season has always started depending on Harvest? And Technicly the Opening Meet (Fox hunt) should not be until after the 1ST November as foxes are classed as Cubs until that date.

Tbh ours usually starts at the same time, but they just avoid the crop fields until they have been harvested. They seem to have cut late for several years now, really feel for the farmers :(

Very interseting Hairy Old Cob - never knew about the 1st Nov. Our OM has always been mid Oct, so not that far off I suppose.

Agree LJR - however frustrated we are with this summer, at least our livelihoods are not weather dependant!

yes, main season starts traditionally after 1st Nov, though I thought it was more because it was because cubs would have been pushed out of the den by their mother by then, where as before then there was still a possibility of them being cared for by the vixen (i.e if they were a late litter). But Autumn hunting starts earlier, usually September time up here, though I know packs who have already started.

We were pencilled in to start on 3rd September, but this is under review as harvest was so badly delayed. We have now had a largely dry week and a blisteringly hot weekend so combines and grain carts have been racing all over the weekend. An enormous task to catch up.

When you get to be one of the Grey Grizzled village elders like myself (well not that old) August is historically a wet Month it always has been so, so that it filled the grain for harvest in September which was the traditional Harvest month but in our infinite wisdom and breeding new varieties of crops everthing is being dragged forward but August is still a wet month and it probably always will be. But with Harvester capabilities of today its all over in a few days.

Years ago we we were combining for weeks on end, Winter Barley and rape oats end of july August then into Winter wheat and spring crops Beans October -Niovember 1987 very wet autumn Combines came home Christmas Eve having completed the linseed.

But they were Happy days unlike the litigous H&S ruined timesin which we now live our firm now employs a "Compliance Manager" talk about a career built on BULL POO.
