Axel has started weeing an awful lot over the past few days, his bed is awful in the mornings now and he wees as soon as you put him in his stable, if he's tied up on the yard he really fidgets too, and stands as if he needs a wee, but he wont do it on concrete and waits until he's in his stable or out in the field.

Is it something to be worrying about?

Excessive weeing can be a sign of diabetes but at this time of year I would suggest it is most likely to be caused by the increased moisture content of grass. What happens if you keep him in for 24 hours? Does he wee less then?

If it was me hon I would call the vet. When Murphy was first dianosed with his back problem that was the first thing that alerted us he just wee'd out on hacks and as soon as you got home which really wasn't like him. Vet said he thought it was his response to being in pain. We now know that when he starts doing this something is wrong.

My horse did this following steriod injections into his cofifn joint. It's a really rare side effect (my vet has never seen it himself before) and I doubt it's relevant to Axel but worth a thought. Apparently the steriods trigger the kidneys to go into overdrive. The vet just advised to make sure he had plenty of fresh water and if he wasn't better in two weeks he would come back out. After about 10 days he went back to normal.

Have you got lots of dandelions in the field? They are a diuretic, so if he was eating lots of them that could be the cause.

One of our horses started weeing lots last year and nobody could work out why, until I saw him out in the field strategically eating all the dandelion plants instead of grass

Hi Seahorse

It could be due to the grass coming through .... when Mots has his hour of grass, the first thing he does when he comes in is to have a big drink .... it's like the grass encourages them to drink .... and then wee more

As someone else said, if in doubt call the Vet .... a chat on the phone might be enough

Merlin is weeing a bit more than normal,...... he isnt stabled but he always has a wee when I catch him...... everytime!!

But he then weed in the trailer on the way to a hack on monday.. and then weed twice actually on the hack (about 2 1/2 hours).... he usually never wees with me on board!!!

So I think that the grass is coming through and is lush, so more wee to come out!!

Yes all the horses on the yard are weeing more than normal, we are all putting it down to the spring grass coming through.
