I clipped my boy on Sat for the first time reason being he has a very fine coat and is only just backed, so just hasn't needed to be clipped before now!

He was a star and behaved really well, and when I did him I didn't notice any patches on his skin at all, but on Sunday I noticed he has some weeping patches just behind his jaw at the top of his neck, I scrubbed with hibiscrub and put some dermisol on them. They were ok but a bit crusty this morning and then I noticed some more on the other side of his neck up by his mane. He is also a bumpy all over his neck where he is clipped.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this on a first clip?

I wondered if it was a bit like a teenager shaving for the first time??

He was done with standard blades and I just use a normal cliper oil. His skin isn't usually sensitive and he certainly didn't get clipper lines unlike my other horse does (He looks awful for 24 hours usually as he is very sensitive and marks easily)

do you have a pic? only because mine has a few but not sure if i mean the same thing. if not im not sure, but to me it sounds a bit like clipper rash? spech when you said he was bumpy.

My cream horse sometimes gets weepy patches, and it's where he has been rubbing a very itchy patch (his is usually due to lice, they love him unfortunately!).

So could be that he is very sensitive to the clipper oil and has come up in little itchy patches, which he has rubbed. Are the patches in a place that he can easily rub?

yup - quite common - either slight allergy or slight dermatitis - check clipper blades always sharp, keep v clean, sterilise in boiling water (just pour it over) before you use and I hot towel straight after clipping with water containing either hibi or tea tree. Also use white cotton show/summer sheet under rug - sometimes it's the dye in the rugs that set them off!
- have v sensitive TB's / show hacks - get "man clipper rash" even if they hear the clippers

Thanks for the replies, it seems to be going away now... I'll have to make sure I wipe him down after clipping next year.

It seems to be sorting itself out, he definiteyl wasn't rubbing it as there was no ruffled hair around it, just the weepy patches which are a lot better today!

My mare had this for the first time this year (she has been clipped lots of times before). Unfortunately it didn't go away quite as quickly as yours, and had quite a few steroid injections from the vet.

I bought a new can of clipper oil before I clipped her again (last week), and touch wood she has been OK so far.

This mare would not have sensitive skin, and does not normally be allergic to things.
