My boy is 16.1hh irish sports horse (chunky end of sports). I used a weigh tape on him today for first time (i have only had him 7weeks) and it said 538Kg.
Is this about right? Or is this a little low for his height and type? He looks healthy.

I did try to add a photo of him but cant work out how to do it!

It sounds about right to me. That was the weight (on a tape) that I considered the best for my IDx. You do need to remember that tapes don't really give you an accurate weight but are good for monitoring weight loss/gain. Can you condition score him?

Hard to tell without photo - but hands up that I couldn't put one on either!

My 'little' ISH (15hh) was weighed in the summer on a weigh bridge and came in at 480 kg and was told that he was nr perfect weight. Interestingly enough he weighed more on the tape so not convinced on their accuracy.

Do you know how to condition score (google if not and will give you pictures)? I don't worry too much about accurate weighing, more look at his condition ie. if I can see his ribs needs feeding more etc etc

Sorry not to be much help!

My friend has just had a weigh bridge to her yard and they were told that weightapes are usually 50kgs out, ie weigh lighter. The results on the weigh bridge bore this out.

Ah thank u for ur advice so far. He looks pretty healthy to me but i'll look at the scoring method too. Just wanted to use it as a bench mark for winter really and for it to assist me. As he's new horse will monitoring it closely to ensure he's getting the correct feed etc.
