I'd like to possibly ride our 12.2 in future, then my oh can ride my 15.1:-)...

He's a welsh mountain pony, very stocky little chap. Approx 12.2

I'm 5'1, about 10 stone 7, I know I'm too heavy at the min (I'm still losing my baby weight -slowly;) no but seriously I'd like to be able to ride him, I'm thinking 8 no more than 9 stone? I was always 8-9 stone anyway! What does everyone think?

8-9 stone should be fine on a stocky native.
Should be able to carry more if the rider is well balanced and 'light' in their riding.

You are never going to get a definitive answer to this question, it is one of those areas that divides the equine world.

I got lectured recently by a poster for walking my daughters (potential) loan pony up and down the road to try him out for her. He is 12.2hh welsh, I'm a balanced, sympathentic rider weighing about 8stone. Poster said this was likely too much weight for him.

On the other hand, you also hear people talking about Exmoor ponies carrying full grown men hunting all day and some people will tell you they think that is fine.

I think you have to look at the pony and see how he copes. Is he getting tired quickly? Is his back getting sore? Is his behaviour changing after a few weeks riding? I think if you are going to head towards 9stone on a 12.2hh, I personally would be looking at being very careful about things like saddle fit, riding quietly, not doing too much heavy road work etc just to minimise any extra pressure on him.

Depends, is it a fine built new type with long legs and flashy movement but not much bone, or the old stocky type with more bone and a good short back? Obv the second one will carry you far better.
