How much weight could the following carry for hacking, low level RC activities?
Assuming they are fit, in good health, with good conformation, well fitting tack, between 7 and 15 years old and the rider is well balanced?

A) 14hh-14.2hh Highland Pony
B) 14.3hh Welsh Cob
C) 14.1hh to 14.3hh HW Cob
D) 15hh MW Cob

Thanks

I have been advised that a Highland pony about 14hh can carry about 13 - 14 stone 14.2hh around 15 - 16 stone. That sounds quite a lot but I believe this to be about right. Not sure about the others you mentioned but I reckon most of them should be OK up to about 12 stone. It all depends on build and bone though.

highland pony will carry more than 13 stone. copy from highland site Highland ponies were used for traditional crofting as an all purpose pony. They are good in harness and under saddle and are still used on big Scottish estates for deer stalking, carrying up to 20 stones dead weight down steep mountain tracks in all weathers. More recently they were found to be ideal for pony trekking, carrying children and adults with equal ease.

The Job Desription of a 15.1 LW cob is to carry more than 12 stone, A HW or Maxi cob,- to carry more than 14 stone
And this is meant to be for a day's hunting.

So 12 to 14 stone for the cobs and Highland for several hours easy IF the horses are fit, if the riders are balanced and competant 12 stone for the Welsh Cob

All of them should be easily able to take 15 stone for the sort of work you describe if they are typical of their breed - ie good thick bone for the highland and welsh.

My friends 15 hand HW cob carries my 17 stone husband with ease, though he does light hacking only.
