Well I have had him for 4 weeks now and he was a bit chubby when I got him, he's now in moderate work (hacking/schooling, hacks lots of road work and hills) and has lost a few lbs. I personally am happy with his weight but would be interested on opinions as I've never had such a good do'er or cobby type so unsure what I am aiming for - don't want him to be a fatty or skinny!

He's on good grass (turned out between 9-6) and hay (wet), and has only just started hard feed 1 scoop chaff and 3/4 scoop baileys top line cubes (cause he needs a bit more on there) am/pm.

Any opinions would be great, as I've never had such a good do'er.

It is very hard to judge from photos, but I personally think he needs to lose plenty more yet. Nice horse though

He looks pretty porky to me - I wouldn't have him on topline cubes - they are for weight gain. Just loads of hilll work for muscle.

Agree with Ziggy - take him off the topline cubes. Perhaps consider Bailey's lo-cal so he's getting all the nutrients but less of the calories
The best thing for topline is correct work.

He looks a lovely stamp though - have you had a weight tape on him. I would think he needs to still loose a bit.

You've done well to lose some poundage already

, but he still needs to lose some more. Should be able to feel his ribs. All the work you are doing will certainly help (lots of walking, then lots of walk no trot so long as ground is good).

Happy getting fit

I'd agree with everything that everyone else has said! He's got a bit of a belly on him, but he looks like he's a lovely horse! Best of luck with him!

Thanks everyone, originally I wanted him on baileys economy cubes but woman at baileys said no 4 the topline ones as they work better when converting fat to muscle... something to do with the protien in them and that if I fed in very small quantity then combined with work would not cause weight gain... may reduce quantity even more now or switch

Can very easily feel his ribs but know he needs to be a lot more muscley, luckily we have lots of various hills around here!

Cheers guys!

I put my WB on topline cubes last winter, as he needed weight on him badly. He was in medium work throughout the winter, and certainly picked up.
I've always thought topline comes through riding, and riding alone, But i may be wrong?

Working a horse properly is what builds top line. Top line cubes may help but I wouldn't be feeding them to this horse. He needs plenty of good forage and fibre and little else except plenty of hill work.

He is a lovely looking horse and once you've got the weight off he'll be stunning
