My horse has dropped weight and i'm desperate to get it back on him. He has a terrible sugar intolerance and so far any feed I have given him has had an adverse affect on his behaviour. Any recommendations? My farrier commented on how thin he was yday and I feel so upset when all I try and do is the right thing for him :-(

Have you tried Speedi-Beet? It's only 5% sugar which is about as low as it gets, and my mum's skinny boy gets it with a generous helping of micronised linseed (no sugar). I may have read that you can rinse beet to get rid of even more sugar?
I assume you're feeding ad-lib hay or haylage, and you've had it analysed?

Fast fibre too can't remember what sugar level but know its low. Micronised linseed as said above. Has he been ill or is he? The vets recommend myoplast which has spirulina in it, protein rich. Ad lib hay/haylage...

Fast fibre isn't that high in calories though, I don't think, you'd have to feed it in huge quantities.

What breed & age is your horse and what's his routine & workload?

Micronised linseed can help gain weight without fizz, as can Copra which is made from coconut and very low sugar and starch.

Anything from the Allen & Page range should be OK. One of our geldings is really sensitive to any sugars and his behavior deteriorates dramatically. We use Cool & Collected with Power & performance - but there is a calm & condition for weight gain. Give the helpline a ring and see what they suggest. My lad goes nuts on speedibeet!

My highly sugar intolerant mare could happily eat alfalfa, speedibeet and grassnuts. Nowadays I would probably give soaked grassnuts and Speedibeet with Alfa-A oil as the chaff to prevent choke, with micronized linseed added if there was no/not enough improvement.
