Hi all

One of our ponies always drops weight in the winter, however he has now lost weight over the Summer. He is 15 years old and Welsh Section D according to his passport but the dentist thinks he's about 18 - 20 years old and we think he's Welsh x (possibly Arab)

We've tried all different types of feeds including Alfa Beet and Fast fibre but was just wondering whether there was anything else we could try?

He had his teeth done on July 25th and has been tested for laminitis, cushings and EMS. I have suggested getting him scoped for ulcers. He has also been wormed (done June time).

He is out of work as has had on and off lameness since he was attacked in the field in May of this year therefore is lacking quite a lot of muscle and topline/condition.

I have just changed his routine (changed it from Sunday) and it is now:

Fed at 7am
Fed at 2pm and turned out in the field in a lightweight rug (some days with his muzzle some days without - he sufferers with laminitis sometimes)
Brought in at about 7pm for the night when he is fed again and has a huge pile of hay (which he doesn't get through by the next morning).

He doesn't drink a lot all the time but other days he does. He is fed on fast and fibre, Alfa A mollasses free chaff, limestone flour and lami free supplement.

I've suggested to his owner to get him some pink powder senior and some red cell, also cooked linseed oil (although the shop didn't have this the last time she went)

i feed my 40 yr old on fast fibre, veteran vitality and sugarbeet (although as the horse in this case is laminitic, i would substitute it for speedibeet)

it has made a difference to her weight. ;)

(i made veteran vitality bold as it is the only differing factor between what i feed and you do. ;) )
