Hi All,

Have just had a huge disaster with using protexin with my mare- really bad reaction to it and has lost about 25/30kg which she cant afford to lose :(
She is on three feeds a day, (calm and condition, linseed) adlib hay when in and is out on good grass at night.
She has been wormed, but I just cant get anymore weight on her and im worried with winter coming its only going to get worse.
She is really glossy coated but just no fat going on her!
Have also put her onto the Farnham weight builder as ive had good results on this before, but any other suggestions?

I cant put her on high starch feeds as she ties up, and she is barefoot so low sugars needed!

Anything out there that I haven't tried??

Sorry for stating the obvious but has the vet seen her to investigate why she is having problems? Do you have a picture (how poor is she?). How old is she (if young, maybe a growth spurt?)
 
She wont eat copra- been there tried that!
Will have a look at ERS pellets.

She is 19 so def not a growth spurt! She is fine in herself but has always struggled with her weight and is a v fussy eater!
 
Could you substitute haylage for some of the hay, not the ryegrass one which could be too high in sugar but something like the horsehage timothy. Thorogoods do a timothy haylage too.

Also sometimes fussy eaters will eat more when they have a choice of both hay and haylage.

She doesn't like haylage, ive tried them all!

Going to try the ERS pellets and see if that helps! But any other ideas welcome!
 
Sounds like she needs to be checked by a vet - her age and being a fussy eater wouldn't account for such drastic weight loss and inability to put on condition.
 
Dengie alphalpha beet- approved by lami society, very low in starch and great for weight gain!!!! Similar alternative allen and page fast fibre which you can feed a ton of! Blue Chip original or to spec balancer to mix in with it too.
 
baileys cooked cereal meal is brilliant stuff and not overly expensive, i have had a few horses stick their noses up at the coolstance copra as well... give it a god it hasnt let me down yet!!! :-)
 
I have never, ever seen a TB thrive on Calm and Condition.

People on here can testify that Smokey was poor when we got him, despite the huge amount of feed he was getting (he'd wintered very badly in a loan home, and the weight wasn't coming back on well). He was on C&C. We moved him to ERS pellets, alpha beet, alpha A and micronised linseed, and within 5 weeks he was on a diet he'd gained so much weight...He now gets a handful of pony nuts and half a scoop of Good Doer chaff twice a day and is only just slimming back down!
