Horse feed advice-
New 14hh ish pony 10yrs and underweight (nothing drastic).
Last 3 days I've fed him on micronised linseed (1/2 cup), keyflow keyplus conditioning feed (1/4 scoop) & Bailey's 21 easy excell weight gain feed (1/2 scoop).
Pony has become strong and fizzy. Which one of these is likely to be causing this? Want him to gain weight without the side effects???
The packaging on all doesnt suggest any are energy feeds!!!
Please help. TIA

I'd say both your hard feeds will be doing this! The best thing you can give him would be good grazing, maybe add some speedibeet to his chaff and micronised linseed, but I wouldn't be adding conditioning or weight gain feeds myself.

Those are massively high calorie feeds. As JB says you would be better off with good quality grazing and ad lib good quality hay when stabled. Wither of those could easily be mind blowers.

If I absolutely had to pick one I would guess the Balieys becuase it has alfafa and brewers grains in it. Both can fizz up some. But you really would be better letting him gain weight more natrually than stuffing him with high calorie feed. Particularly at the moment when it is not likely that you have him in anything like the workload that feed requires!

It won't be the micronized linseed. You need to look at the sugar/starch content of what you are feeding, Bailey's 21 is higher than 24, they've just brought out 24 I'm using it for mine for that reason, its lower sugar/starch but conditioning. Not sure on the keyflow conditioning feed, what is the sugar/starch content of it ?

I agree it could be the Bailey's and or the keyflow I would ditch both and maybe try grass nuts, or if you really want a quicker weight gain Equijewel is what i would use but it would be my last resort personally as it is quite expensive but i have had good results with it, I would continue with the linseed never known it to fizz mine up and both can be hot and feed sensitive.

Ok tried many things on my skinny ex racer with ulcer, discovered anything with linseed in sent him nuts, spooky etc. He currently has Keyflow keyplus (which is basically the same as Equijewel), speedibeet and Emerald Green Grasstastic, good quality hay and Equivita balancer, yea sacc and salt. He can’t have cereals due to his ulcers. Saracens Re-Leve was brilliant for getting him to eat and put on weight as he was extremely underweight and lacking appetite when I first got him but it made him sweat and whilst not spooky, very “keen” (not doing any work at all as giving him a year off). It served a purpose at the time and would probably feed it again if he is in sufficient work.

This time of year, good grazing should work for but if not much improvement it might be worth getting him scoped for ulcers as the most unlikely horses can have them. Good luck.

What is your ponies current workload and previous diet?
As mentioned that’s a lot of energy so it might be a case of too much too soon.
Id be tempted to go easy on the hard feeds and start with a cup of linseed per feed and patience it will be a good few weeks before you start to see weight gain. Too much too fast could cause you other issues.

I'm finding speediBeet and copra a great conditioning feed not causing any fizziness. I'm a right wimp and as soon as fizziness creeps in I'd be the first to spot it!
Most baileys have quite a high starch content. As does ricebran (equi jewel) whereas copra is low
