Hi!
I’m looking for some help on feed recommendations for my thoroughbred.
He’s currently coming back into work after having some downtime but needs to gain slightly more weight (then maintain) and support whilst gaining muscle. However, he needs a low starch feed & low energy as he can be quite fizzy.
I have previously had him on Coolstance but he now refuses to eat this & he’s currently on red mills care mash.
He is already on linseed :)

I would also love if the recommendations didn’t cost an arm & a leg (obviously if the bag lasts a while then that’s different, but I can’t be spending £100 every 20 days)

Thanks in advance,
Ellie

How much is he getting of the mash and linseed?
And what does the rest of his diet look like, grazing quality and quantity, hay or haylage etc?

When I couldn’t get hold of Coolstance during the winter I had mine on Care & Gain for a while (A&P) - it went down very well! It is lower energy than Coolstance (10.75 vs 15 MJ/kg) so you do have to feed a bit more of it, but it’s very low sugar and starch and high fibre.

I also have mine on up to 720g of linseed per day (120 g/100kg bw). It’s pretty light so that’s quite a lot of linseed!

I’m feeding Pure Feeds ‘Working’ and I still add some extra linseed. My gelding is 5 next month and in light work, can be a bit stressy and silly, but he’s looking fab on this and definitely gaining weight nicely and rounding out.

'Fizz' is usually the result of gastric discomfort/dysfunction as a result of making dietary changes too quickly - applies particularly to things like alfalfa that often require a significant change in the microbiome to digest efficiently if the diet had previously been grass-based.

I find equijewel good - expensive, but only a little needed.
