Henry was weighed on Monday and he is now only 200gms off his target weight!!!

So at the rate he is going by next week he should be at the ideal weight recommended by the vet - so anyone got any tips on adjusting his food to keep it that way?

At the moment he is on light dog food but I am wondering whether to switch to normal dried food. He does get plenty of exercise, but because he has been humungous in the past does that mean he needs to stay on the light food for maintainence too? I was under the impression that would be more for dogs that can't exercise much.

I'm nearly at the end of the current bag of food so will need to start weaning him onto anything new pretty soon so any advice would be great!

I am so proud of my little skinny monkey - don't want to tempt fate yet but once the scales say he is at the right weight I will put before and after pics up

If he is getting the right level of exercise and no tit bits then you could put him back on a maintenance diet although you would need to watch the levels that you feed as there will be more calories/kg than the light diet. Monitor his feeds and exercise regime. If he does less work one day reduce the amount of feed he has that day. Similarly if he has hard work one day you can feed slightly more. It's all a matter of calories in - calories burned = weight. If more calories are consumed than are burned off then the dog will gain weight. If you are tit bitting, remember however many tit bits he gets in a day reduce his feeds accordingly. You could try tit bits like bits of carrot and/or apple etc which are low in calories (depends if your dog likes them, my lab x does!!)
