Just been told my horse shouldn't carry more than 12 stone. I wouldn't put that on him anyway but is there a norm for Max weights you can expect certain types to carry? It's just got me thinking....

This has been done an awful lot of times on here. Yes, in my opinion there are maximum weights that certain types can carry but that isn't a very PC opinion.

*Sits back with popcorn*

Yes their is deffinately a max weight limit that most horses can carry. Of course their is, you cant expect a tb to carry the same as a draft horse for example.

Out of interest what horse do you have?

The RDA have a chart about how much a horse can carry. It's got something to do with how much bone they have.
But i think it also depends on the rider a good well balanced 8stone rider will be lighter for the horse than a 7stone novice who bounces around on there back.
When i worked in the riding school thats the principles we worked on anyway.
(should i duck now:p)

He's a 15.1 Standardbred, quite stocky and not long in the back as some are (i'm 10stone if you're wondering)

I am a heavier rider (12 stone eeeeeeeek!) who really believes in weight limits for horses.
I ride horses between 14hh and 18hh regularly, I (and my employers) judge a horses ability to carry weight on the amount of bone the horse has, as well as the natural balance of the horse and the balance of the rider.

I hate seeing unbalanced larger riders on horses that are too small for them.

Elwyn Hartley Edwards devised suggested weight carrying based on the amount of bone. Obviously you need to take the horses age and confirmation and condition of the horse into account as well. For example you wouldn't want to put the max weight on a very young or very old horse.I can't find the book the information is in but think I have remembered it correctly. 8" of bone is 12 stone. So 8 and a half would be 12 and a half stone and 9 inches 13 stone +. There is also a mathematical calculation you can do based on height of horse, its weight etc. I am sure someone else will post that.
