HI

3 months ago we were given a 10 month old Weimaraner, she is a lovely dog with bags of energy. She lives out side in a heated kennel and a massive run. She gets at least 3 hours a day exercise and seems content with her live style. She has the radio on when left a lone whilst I am at work and does not seem worried about being left alone.
The more I think about dogs and their behaviour the more I think that maybe it would be good for her to have a companion. I would really need to get another young Weimaraner as not many other dogs seem to have the energy that she has.

Firstly what are your thoughts on keeping just one dog ?

Secondly If I do decide to get another any ideas where I could get one from, I do not want to go to a beeder as i think there are more than enough dogs out there needing homes, but most of the rescue places do not agree with keeping dogs outside......

Any ideas ????

Hi Samlib,

My weimaraner Etta lives together with my 19 month old boxer dog. Before Lucy was born we had another boxer bitch who sadly died due to kidney failure last march at the age of 8 1/2 years of age. We found that after losing Megan who had been her companion for so long, Etta seemed rather quiet and also like your dog she lives outside on our yard so would be on her own for a bit at certain times during the day.

Since buying Lucy, Etta seems fine again, and has company all of the time. The live in a heated room which adjoins the tack room and stables and they have access to half of our yard from there, and come into the house on cold days and nights. If you are looking for a breed to keep up stamina wise with your weimy, the boxer can manage this and more.

I also find that although they are partial to 'deaf ear syndrome' whilst training like weimaraners, they do seem a lot easier to train and don't have the wilfull streak that is often seen in Weimaraners. After owning 2 boxers i would now always opt for one. They really do believe they are lap dogs, and despite their size still try and sit on you at any given opportunity!! They are the most affectionate, sweet natured dogs i have ever come across and would be a lovely match with your weimaraner.

If you do decide to go ahead with a boxer though, i would strongly recommend buying through a reputable breeder.

Good luck and if you want anymore info regarding boxers etc, my PM box is always open!!
