Hi there,

I recently rehomed an ex hunting Weim - about 6 weeks ago now.
He is a big dog and just over 2 years old.
He has lost a lot of condition over the last couple of weeks due to a number of things:
1. New home
2. He is on the yard and active all day
3. It has been fairly cold (2 jackets on him currently)
4. Neutered about 2 weeks ago

He is being fed Redmills premium greyhound 3 times a day but he still looks underweight.
So i need a change of plan.
Can anyone recommend a dogfeed to help keep condition on?
I have had 2 Weims in the past and am familiar with the breed and do understand that they are a very slim breed but this guys is definitely could do with a few pounds now.

Any recommendations gratefully received :)

Try tripe (the raw green kind, if you can get it)

I would actually say most of the Weims I see are, ahem, quite lardy :o and I'd rather a skinny dog than a lardy one, so I wouldn't worry overly.

where did you get him from?? Does he live down the yard or is he just there during the day and goes home with you at night?? The Weimaraners that I know do not do well in kennels or yards just mooching about they are all pretty clingy.

I don't know redhills greyhound diet its not one I've heard of being used for an HPR. I would have thought its a diet specific to the needs of greyhounds. Try changing your diet I had a quick ask what friends feed theirs and its pretty much same as mine, either BARF or the kibble types like Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved, Burns (although my dogs never do well on this).

Have you wormed??

Thank you CaveCanem :) I will detour by the butchers this evening.

I've fed Red Mills to a dog who ran their weight off, if you think about it, it makes sense!!

It was originally a greyhound feed company but they do other ranges now.

PM me your location, if you are where you think you are, I know a good supplier of tripe.

He was previously in a kennel with other dogs and from the sounds of it was pretty inactive for most of the day until let out.
He is home at night at the moment as it is too cold even in the hay shed.
They will all stay at the yard overnight when things warm-up.
Looking at the local petshop Purina, EUKANUBA, Hills Science plan, IAMS, Pedigree, Bakers, ProPlan, Royal Canin and Wagg.
I am in Ireland so not sure if the other foods mentioned above are available here.
I don't want to pay over the odds for a brand that is essentially crap either.

Red Mills is by far the preferable food from those ranges!!!

Skinners Field and Trial is available in Pets at Home and Jollyes and is a good mid-range brand.

Ok that is good to know.
I can try the tripe plus the standard food and keep an eye on him for a while.
I will also looks at the Skinners feed.

Would it be awful to give him a pump of the horses linseed oil in his food too?

Hi,

I've changed my weim's food to Autarky made by Dodson and horrell. She is on the salmon and rice one. My weim is very lively, hunting and doing agility. This food is maintaining her weight at the moment as she is on the skinny side and I struggle to get weight on her.

Also adds benefit is that this food contains NO cereals!!!

Lots of cereal!

Ingredients
Salmon (min 35%), rice (min 33%), oats, chicken fat, yeast, full fat linseed, alfalfa, prairie meal, peas, unmolassed beet pulp, dicalcium phosphate, mannan oligosaccharides, milk thistle, marigold, nettle, seaweed, blackcurrant extract, carrot, yucca extract, thyme, beetroot, tomato, peppermint, fennel, paprika, turmeric, dandelion, ginger, fenugreek, oregano & aloe vera (min 0.4% herbs, min 4% vegetables).

What makes you think this is no cereals? Rice, oats & Maize gluten.

tripe is actually quite low in fat and i discovered recently only useful for putting on weight because it is so palatable that dogs who are fussy usually scoff it down

lamb and duck are the best meats for weight gain and having struggled for 18 months with my highly wired young collie bitch I have now got her putting weight on feeding berriewoods minced lamb. Its not expensive either.

For weight gain you can'r beat as CC suggested tripe and added oils, veg oil and fish oil and the best dry dog food I have ever seen aid rapid weight gain is Arden grange (lamb and rice) my friend has 4 weims and she struggled with weight on the males and she tried loads of food and settled on Arden Grange and to be fair they look fantastic she often adds sardines/eggs.
