my new pony (on lwvtb) is a 14.3hh ish gelding, 10 yrs old..

anyway since i first saw him til now (had him almost 2 weeks) hes had a weird coat.. its hard to explain bur basically it looked like he had lumps underneath coat so coat is raised in some places and others not.. after feeling him we realised that he did have lumps but his owner had said he has very sensitive skin and can be allergic to things so we put it down to
an allergy..

anyway iv used nothing on his coat and all he has is hay and grass and lunps are still there.. his coat is very silky but thick its weird.

well havwnt managed to clip him yet but last night i rode and all i did was walk with some trot for maybe an hour-45 mins and he was dripping with sweat like hed been competing and his breathing was weird. before i started my ym noticed he had a little muscle spasm in his back leg-dont know if thats related.

anyway hes a very stressy pony so that combined with being unfit and the temp may be why he was so sweaty but it didnt seem right.. hes fine now btw..

its just odd.. any ideas on what could be wrong if anything and any ideas on coat?!
first thought of me and my ym was cushings but surely hes too young and coat isnt quite like cushings ponies iv seen :s

I'd be having the vet out tbh - muscle spasms and breathing changes would be ringing alarm bells for me.
The coat may/maynot be related. Bumps without scabs under the coat could be heat bumps or lumps from too much protein?

My gelding developed Cushings at 15 years old, and I hav read of many starting younger. His coat began to have a wave pattern on his hind quarters and gradually crimped like a perm but isn't partcularly long. He always went a bit curly/wavy when wet or sweaty, anyway.

He also drank a lot more than normal - is yours drinking or peeing more than normal?

I'd ask for a blood teat asap as laminitis is a risk once they develop Cushings. It was laminitis which finally made my vet realise what was going on with my boy.

the muscle spasm stopped and he seems fine today. im going yo see how he is today when i ride.
it just seemed like he shouldnt have been breathing that heavy..

il try get a pic later.. we thought the lumps may have been from.heat cz they went then came back

Sounds like urticaria which is usually an allergic response to something eaten or in contact with. Swelling can involve the air ways as well as skin so I would definitely get the vet anyway to check him over.

I would clip him asap, for 2 reasons:

1 - you can get a better look at the lumps

2 - this will stop him over heating

My irish cob has very sensitive skin and over reacts to fly bites etc, and gets blocked sweat pores if his coat it too thick, resulting in cyst like lumps. Stupidly I did not clip off his saddle patch last winter and ended up with heat bumps under his saddle, and had to miss the last part of the hunting season to get them healed up.

How fit is he? The breathing and muscle spasm could be related to working hard in a thick coat, epescially if he is not particularily fit. Also have you had him vetted yet, as would be a good opporunity to voice these concerns to the vet?

Good luck and hope he works out!

not had him vetted yet as currently on one month trial before the lwvtb.... he will be vetted later on..

sidney-what you said sounds spot on. il clip him tonight if i can.

thanks guys :) if hes the same tonight il call vet

My horse has sensitive skin and often gets lumps and bumps on his coat.. if his diet changes or the quality of the straw changes or from heat or from anything really! - His often go down within a few hours.

With regards to the sweating, (like others have said) I would try to get him clipped as soon as possible and see what he's like then. My horse is unclipped and wouldn't sweat up from doing that little work. But there are horses on my yard that probably would sweat up - just because they aren't as physically fit.

My welsh cob woudl certainly sweat a lot and puff from 45 - 60 minutes of trotting and walking, becuase he is very unfit and also very hairy!

He also develops urtacaria quite easily as a reaction to extreme temperatires - hot or cold.
