Hi, apologies for the long post.. My dog weirdly last Friday came in from the garden whimpering, ran to me with a shaking back right leg and not fully weight bearing. 5 minutes later she was seemingly fine, i lead walked her that day as a precaution but seemed fine. Then next day she stood up with her front legs on the windowsill to lookout and she yelped as soon as she was up on her back legs. I thought it must be a strain or similar so took it easy with her.

Sunday on morning walk she was completely fine but Sunday evening evening, she was running and completely freaked out screaming in pain. I’ve never heard anything like it as she wouldn’t stop screaming. I checked her over and she didn’t stop for about two minutes. This time it was her back left leg lifted up and she wouldn’t put it down for a few minutes after.

But about 5 mins after she calmed down and seemed normal again, no lameness etc. She’d been on rest and I took her to the vet on monday evening. He looked at her legs, checked her hips spine etc and thought she was a little bit uncomfortable but there was no lameness or obvious pain to touch.

Tuesday morning she was awful, lots of screaming even with the pain killers and couldn’t at all get comfortable so back to the vet.

Had spine and hip x rays done on tuesday and they happy and said they look good. Worried about the extreme reactions, not just a single yelp but it goes on for a minute or so with leg lifted and then once she settles she goes back to acting like nothing happened and no lameness.

Does anyone have any thought? I’m going to speak to vet again tomorrow and her vet physio too. MRI is an option I think, I’d rather know exactly where she is injured if possible as I will literally spend every day worrying about this now most likely.

Any thoughts please let me know 🙏

I do have a video I can send if anyone is happy to take a look. Thank you

Now that you have x-rays back, query an iliopsoas muscle strain. It can be a thing in GSDs.

There's also a muscle on the thigh I can't remember the name of, that can go ping suddenly. ETA it's the grascilis, again, it can be a thing in the breed, especially those doing explosive exercises. That would be what I would lean towards, two dogs from my club have had this injury and one has come back into work after rehab (the other was older and did tracking only).
There can be a genetic element, apparently.

Oooo sorry I meant to update you on this!! I think this is what the vet mentioned! She said they could also ultrasound a small muscle in the hip but I didn’t get the name so I presume it’ll be this! Thank youuuuu 🙏🙏

Also interesting ok thank you, I’ll ask the vet about these. I’m going to push for some more scans so we know exactly what we’re dealing with🤞
