Hi guys, so basically my mare has a lump under her skin just below her main on her crest. It's quite hard, and doesn't bother her at all! Can touch it etc and she is not bothered! At first I thought it could be a fly bite as she gets quite a few flys round her (got a fly rug on now) but then I also had a feeling it could be a fat lump as she is currently on a diet! But then as I've been reading on the Internet I've heard of something called a Hematoma? I've taken a picture of it but I'm not sure how I can add a pic on here, any help? It's just a bit bigger than a £2 coin. It's been there for about a month ish? It's not weeping at all etc. I've got the vet coming out for injections on Wednesday so going to get them to have a look. Just wondered if you guys could help. Thanks x

Has she been in amongst any thorns? Could be a thorn embedded and then pus around it.

My horse started with a small lump on his neck that got bigger and spread to both sides - one vet didn't know what it was and just poked at it and gave me some DMSO to rub on it.

The next vet actually bothered to stick a needle in it - pus. He then lanced it and about 2 litres of pus came shooting out - apparently it was quite spectacular! Good thing I wasn't here as I would have been on the floor.

I don't think I will ever see anything like it again, but now I know what to look for, I will know it when I see it!

Anyway worth getting the vet to have a little poke around.

Wow that's interesting! She isn't near any thorns. And haha, I love watching stuff like that - find it really fascinating! Yes, a bit weird lol. Deffo will get the vet to have a poke round. Thank you!

Is the lump hard or soft?

My grey ID has melanomas that look bit like that but they are quite hard nodules under the skin. See what the vet says when they are out and sure they will advise and maybe suggest a fine needle aspiration to see what inside lump. A haematoma usually appears rapidly following trauma and the one time my youngster did one, it came up very spectacularly and was quite tender to touch for several days as he really didn't like me going anywhere near it and took its time to go down.

That's interesting, just looked up melanomas and could well be one of them! It's sort of hard but not rock hard?? How did you get it treated?? Was it a massive vet bill - I'm worried sick. I've only had her 3 weeks so insurance won't help. Thank you x
