Hi

My horse is in good conditon and isnt scurfy or anything but most summers she gets this stuff that looks a bit scurfy and the fur sort of pulls out she isnt bothered by it but I want to know what it is? It cleared up last time when I cleaned it in hibiscrub each night, she doesnt wear boots in the field or anything and dont think its flies as she has fly repellant on which she has all over so i dont think its that, any ideas?

this may be `grease` also called mallanders/sallanders depending if it is on the front legs or back legs.

i have just clipped my cobs feathers off and was supprised to find a little(usually check for it but this only showed up when i clipped)
i washed with mild hibiscrub, dried and rubbed in asda baby oil and all ok now.

you may need to get yourself some pig-oil and sulpher as recomended by many on the forum.

its generally on the back legs in the middle of the cannon bone and on the inside, i think i'll just have to hibiscrub it, thanks at least now i have an idea of what it may be and hopefully means my horse isnt a freak! so do you know what causes it? Its usually in the summer, although strangely she has a very thin coat all year her winter coat looks like most horses summer one! Just realised i spelt patchy wrong what a doughnut!

well it mostly pons with feathers and heavy horses.
if you google `grease horses legs` you may find some clues.
hope it is sorted soon.

oh ok thanks she definately doesnt fall into that category she is a 16.3 dutch warmblood with no feathers what so ever, very strange thanks for your help! Yeah so do i hoping to do some showing this summer dont think big bald patches will go down to well!

I ride an anglo arab for someone who has the same thing as his coat changes in autumn and winter. It doesn't bother him or spread and it disappears after a couple of weeks so I've always just left well enough alone.

how about mites? this was the first clue i had, was told it was "greasy heel" altho it was back of knees, has resulted in him losing his feathers today and im heartbroken. i usually manage to control / prevent it with sulphur powder and pig oil as others have recommended to you but alas i am not there to do this at present.

My mare ( a dary bay TB with a winter coat like her summer coat too!) has exactly the same thing - just looks scurfy until you start rummaging around and then the hair comes out in clumps! I learnt to leave well alone. I read somewhere that antibacterial insecticial dog shampoo helped so just in case of mites as I was worried it was and although I knew in my heart of hearts it wasnt mites I got it and used it a couple of times and it seemed to help a little and also hibiscrub but tbh I think it is coat change related and I try not to disturb too much. The scurf doesnt bother her at all.

Hi,
My Irish mare get's this too and she has no feathers either! It's just the change from winter to summer coat. Wash it off with a bit of dilute Hibiscrub and apply a bit of Vaseline when the hair has dried.
