It is an odd question I know but is there a smell/perfume/aroma that doesn't clash with the distinctive (wonderful) horsey smell? Or is there an aroma that horses like or find calming (other than food) :D

Humour me please, ideas welcome!

In the early Victorian days, there was huge demand for horses as they were the transport of the day. The upshot of this was that the horses were often poorly backed/broken. The old horseman's tip was to use lavender oil as a calming scent on loopy horses. I'm a real nellie as a rider and (years ago) prayed every day for a "magic feather" like the one Dumbo had to make him brave. When I read about lavender, I bought a teeny roll on perfume and a bigger spray bottle. Thankyou Boots. I'd put the roll on lavender on the horse's neck/chest and then spray both of us liberally from the bottle. People always said we smelt like a tart's boudoir going out for a ride but it worked!

The good news is that with Sunny's help I weaned myself off it so still have almost a full spray bottle. I keep it in a dark corner of my grooming kit, just in case.........

My boy also like lavender.

We ride through a village to get to the local bridleways, and pass any number of window boxes / gardens with lavender growing. H loves to stick his nose into the plants as we pass. This becomes a slight problem when the lavender is in full flower, as he is in real danger of inhaling a bee.

You could also try PAX (advert normally in back of H&H). It doesn't work for all but for those that like it it definately seems to calm them. Not cheap though.
