Weird/strange things wrong with your horse

I had a terrible year last year regarding the horses and vet visits, every horse/pony had at least one visit from the vet but they seemed to be weird problems that the vet hadn't seen before. The strangest were:
My then 2 year old had a growth on his gum which the vet said he'd only ever seen in dogs

. He said to leave it til he was older but I was worried it might be serious as the pony is grey so arranged a biopsy, however the pony came in from the field on day and it had gone, he must've knocked it off. It hasn't come back and we never found out what it was

.

My mare (who had a 6 week old colt) had a freak accident in the field and fractured 2 small bones in her hock. The vet's in the vet hospital had never seen this type of injury before or those 2 bones broken before. They even referred the case to other vets abroad and none of them had seen them either

. What was also strange (but lucky) was that she didn't damage the tendons or ligaments aswell. Any way she was on 4 months box rest and the bones have healed fine. They don't really know if she'll be rideable again and have said she'll probably get arthiritis in the joint but she is now sound in the field and I've started her back in work, so far she's stayed sound but then she's only been walking.

My other mare, who was then 6, got chronic mastitis. Didn't clear up with anti-b's from own vet so back into vet hospital for a scan to rule out a growth or tumor. Thankfully that was ruled out but she did have a lot of scar tissue in one mammary gland, which, get this, they had never seen before! It was also interfering with her lymph glands so she was getting massive odema. Anyway back on stronger anti-bs and it's cleared up as much as it's going to although one teat is 3 times the size of the other. Mystery is how did she get it in the first place?

Then today had my colt gelded and the vet said one of his testicles was back to front

. Guess what, in all his years of castrating colts (and that's been a lot!) he'd never seen this! He removed them both fine but the back to front one was a bit smaller and less developed than the other.

Anyway, just getting fed up with all these weird problems, thankfully I suppose none of them have been too serious. The vets think it's great when they get something interesting, especially in the vet hospital as they use it as a teaching case (this does reduce the bill somewhat

). Anyone else's horses have weird or unusual problems?

Merlin only has half a brain

(joking..... he only has 1/4)

But he also has the worst arthritis affected fetlock joint the vet has ever seen on a totally sound and in full work horse!!!

I have offered to let him have the leg when merlin has finished with it!!!

Ellie has a little weird mark on her hock. It looks like a small patch of ringworm, but definitely isnt! The hair doesnt grow on it; it kind of swirls around it, and its been like that ever since I can remember. Not caused by getting up/rolling/rubbing, and the other day I asked my vet to have a look at it - he said he'd never seen anything like it before! He thinks it is a very weirdly located whorl - which makes sense, as Ellie has lots of them!

Well my boy is a Hermaphrodite. I'm not kidding! He has nipples and a bent penis!!! He had surgery as a youngster to find out if he was a boy or a girl and to find and remove his testicles! He can be quirky in the spring as he has *coughs* hormone issues! And he pees over his back feet (it's the way it bends!

) Apart from that he's totally normal!
