ive just come across this on ebay. does any one have any idea of its use? to me it looks like a bradoon type bit has some how been connected to the main snaffle bit, and god nos what the other bits are! ...

It a bit for trotting - the other bits attach to cheek pieces to keep their heads up to stop them breaking pace

That particular looks like a plain loose ring snaffle bit with snaffle overcheck.

It does resemble a citation - however I *think* (and its hard to tell form the pic), that the thinner mouthpiece is longer on the pic above than a citation

Would also be fair to say that a citation is just a trotting bit used with one cheek piece and not two (so a citation crushes the face and stabs the roof of the mouth!). If used with an overcheck cheek strap it would just stop the head from lowering and not have the nasty side affects

This is a citation

It is a citation. There should be an elastic strap that attaches to the metal loops that goes over the nose and up the front of the face, a bit like an australian noseband. Needless to say it is a very strong bit used mainly on racehorses (not very often nowadays as there are many more alternatives) although I believe Ian used one on Murphy for a while.
