I put that I'd ignore - purely because if 'somebody told me' I would have no proof what so ever and sadly, I doubt the authorities would be able to do anything. If i had some proof or a solid case then I would report, but it's difficult to get.
Totally shocking. i know farriers are not all that cheap, but trying to do it yourself is totally stupid. Negligence and welfare. The sad thing is as Jumpthemoon said, there would be lack of proof to do much about it..
the ponies are 2 years old and being ridden on the roads. One has deformed feet so needs specialist treatment IMO. Just need to decide how is the best way to approach this so the ponies get help. They are not thin or injured. But I feel awful for these babies. Just don't know best way to get help.
i know of someone that used to up until a couple of years ago, but apparently you cant get hold of the shoes anymore unless you are a farrier, i voted ignore because at the end of the day its up to other people what they do, unless they are shoeing other peoples horses and charging? thats very wrong.
rara007 is right in asking if the owners are capable. I believed that you could trim your horses feet but you were not allowed to shoe???
It takes years to become a fully qualified farrier

i must have been writing when you were!! we have travellers near us and they drive YEARLINGS, its so sad to watch, but their feet always look ok and i should imagine they shoe their own. i think if you can do it than fair enough but if their just messing up the feet then try and do something about it.
I put report but I agree you need evidence. Trimming is afaik legal, but shoeing isn't and it's a criminal offence, isn't it? I think i would contact the worshipful company of farriers, and ask advice as to what action can or should be taken about illegal shoeing.

We've got them right near us, too, driving yearlings etc. Terrible IMO. They don't shoe their own where we are though - their farrier lives down the road from us and he is forever coming back with battered old trailers and coloured ponies!!
Also should have said. One has club feet so needs special attention I think. The other one has a razor blade of a shoe hanging off one fore. It's got really long toes and collapsed heels.
the yearlings that are used around here are in an awful state, i saw 2 blokes out at lunchtime one day and about 3 hours later i was driving past the entrance to their ''site'' and they were just going home. the poor things were skin and bones but the RSPCA and police are too scared to face them!
i reported some travellers to the rspca as they were beating a horse that was too crippled to move.
all the rspca did was go down and they removed 3 " at risk" animals........
never mind the other 10 in the field..
they did take the lame one though so i suppose thats something
It is an offence to shoe if you're not a farrier. Report to RSPCA or ILPH. You don't need to prove it. You can probably even do it anonymously if you're worried. No good involving the police - we all know they're not interested.
I would definitely give the RSPCA a miss. The WCF is much more likely to have useful information in this situation. If it is a criminal offence, then they may even take legal action themselves.
i would report as they shouldnt be riden yet anyway i hate it when babies get ridden too young and then they get probs later on. there was a shetland foal stolen a few yrs back and the ppl that had stolen it were riding it things like that make me angry thats also y i dont like horse racing much as most are riden far too young and have a short life (not all race horses though as there are good trainers out there that like to grow on the horses first)
I couldn't answer you poll, as simply I wouldn't do either but would try to find other information to support what has been said before making a decision. Nobody will be able to do anything positive without proof, going in too early will simply allow them to hide whatever equipment they are using.

Good point. Am going to give some serious thought. Thanks everyone.
Watcher - i would have thought the proof would be that they couldnt say who did trim the horses? Like I would be easily able to say its so and so and then so and so could agree...whereas these people wont be able to do that?

Law is a funny thing, and the onus is on the prosecution to prove a positive, not for the defence.
