I guess I am not suprised. Vet cannot remove it because of how close it is to her artery and does not want to mess with or disturb it for that same reason. She has quite enlarged lymph nodes too just above it. He said I should keep enjoying her and it could be ten years before it gets big enough to block her airway/eating or blood flow. He said to keep an eye on her and that I would notice if she was struggling due to it.

Anyone have any stories to share of living with melanoma in the neck?

I had a horse on loan about 5 years ago who was grey and riddled with mellanomas. He had a load removed from under his tail but they grew back, he also had a large one above his eye and one on his neck. He was 10 when i first loaned him, i competed him quite heavily in dressage, eventing local shows and eventually took him to college with me. In the end i had him 3 years and they never caused him any problem in that time. Although i have to admit he did start growing more and the ones he had got larger, this was why on mutual agreement we ended the loan.
Also my old boy now (27) has had just a single one under his tail for 11 years or so and in the last coupld of months another one has come up under there.
On both occasions i was told the same by the vets, just keep enjoying them while you can as nothing can be done, but it could be 10 months or 10 years.....

But the prognosis seems reassuring and hopefulyl will take her past a normal life expectancy before it causes major problems

horses. don't y'just love 'em.

I was just reading about an unproven treatment called cimetidine. Anyone use this and have luck reducing the tumor?

My vet did not suggest it and it seems to work for some and not at all for others in what I have been reading. Is it worth looking into?

Are the melenoma standing off her neck?? And how big is it as we have had a few rem, oved off my grey by banding them, allowing them to drop off

We have just lost a mare to melanoma at our yard. She was diagnosed about 10-13 years ago and had huge tumours spreading from under her ears around her head to her cheek over 6inches across and about 3 inches proud from her face - on both sides of her head. She was also riddled with them under her tail. These never bothered her right up until this year. Her owner stopped riding her about 6 years ago due to a tendon injury and the fact that a bridle didn't really fit over them. But they really didn't seem to affect her, not until the very end. So there really is hope for you and your horse to continue enjoying one another for many years to come.

I had a connemara mare who had a huge number of melanomas. There were so many under her tail that her tail stuck out horizontal to the ground. They were internal as well and she first got them at a young age. She eventually died at the age of 33 of natural causes!

If you can still get it anywhere I found Dermobian was excellent for 'drying them out' (They can get a bit kind of weepy and this ointment would settle them down).
