Friend broke down in her horsebox this morning on the busy A420 - where she broke down was horrendously dangerous as it was on a bend where the road turns from single to dual carriage way and vehicles are picking up serious speed. The Police arrived within a couple of minutes of her reporting the breakdown (someone else had also called). They managed to get the lorry off the corner and down the road a little, put up cones and signs and kept my friend calm (she was terribly worried). We showed up with a trailer and one officer went speeding off and stopped the traffic so we could safely unload the horses and take them away - because of their absolute professionalism there were no delays for the traffic and we took horses off lorry and onto trailer and were off on our way within about 3 minutes - brilliant stuff.

So please all you "Police are useless" people, take heed...they are not, and the ones we have round here tend to be rather excellent!

Have to say that when I had a front tyre blow out on the M1 at night the police were fantastic. Arrived on scene within 2 minutes. Coned off the hard shoulder for several hundred yards and then placed the police car at the start of the cones with flashing lights all blazing. Stayed there for the 2 hours it took to get the tyre sorted.
Brilliant

why dont you try writing (v easy just to email it) a letter to H&H and see if you can get it on the letters page - always nice to hear a happy ending story

The police get alot of bad press & normally all people want to do is complain. Now they have done something well & acted professionally it would be an ideal time to drop a line to their Chief Constable so their good work can be recognised. Just a thought

Defo write a letter of thanks as it will go on the officers personal file and letters of thanks are always gladly received, not that I'm biased but the police do a hard enough job with little or no thanks most of the time!

We had a similar incident where I had to rescue a friend on the A1(M). the motorway was shut and we even made it on to the local radio traffic news.

The PCs drank coffe and ate biscuits with us whilst we waited for the extra officers necessary to close the motorway.

Have experience similar but with the Highways Agency on the M40 this summer. They were excellent. Stopped all 6 lanes of traffic (both directions) to enable my friend to unload her horse from his trailer and into our lorry. They even waited until we'd got the lorry going and upto a decent speed before they let the traffic go!!
