Came on to say the same thing. Fantastic result for an unassuming, genuinely talented rider who at 22yo is only just out of young riders. AND, he won they 7yo Championship last night with a different horse!
There must be someone out there who is looking for a top class rider to sponsor. Who knows with the right horsepower how far he could go?
I bought them both, Sauron as a totally wild yeaarling colt -[travelled loose in the Oakley with Creme van't Steentje!!!] Sold him when he was just starting to jump newc and Beaujolais was a 2 yrold when bought and sold when just jumping Discovery, Both castrated at 4 1/2 as couldn't concentrate enough, so always nice to see them win, I must have made the right decision!!
So how many Foxhunter Champions has the Brendon/Light setup been directly involved with now then ? A few i think
I noticed from the results that 75% of the field were clear in the first round this year. Was it a particularly strong final...or did the coursebuilder drop a clanger
we've actually won it twice, on Once More in 1984 [I think; long time ago!!!] and with Unbelievable Darco in 2002. We also produced the dam of this year's 7 yr old runner up - Gemmaire's Precious, dam has a 3 yr old by Unbelievable and is in foal to him again now. We also trained will funnell and john renwick!! And Scott did a season here.....
Well done to Scott Brash, a win is a win but I was appalled by the course building and the standard of riding. These are young horses at the start of what hopefully maybe an international career. The arena at the NEC is tight, the crowds are right on you and for a young horse, the lights are very strong. The jump off forced many riders to push for the long one rather than hold for a comfortable pop. It takes months to recover a horse's confidence after being shoved into or stood off a big fence - these horse are young, its their scope, carefulness and rideability that should be rewarded and seen as part of a long term production plan.
As an alternative to this challenge, Britsh owners can take their young horses abroad to Belgium, France, Holland etc to really learn their craft in a relaxed way, where there are nice courses around 1.30m which reward careful jumping in a fluid and confident manner.
A good horse is worth producing really well and steadily through competitions which build confidence and knowledge.

Not a bad record then
I well remember the days when Will rode for you...i was a young teenager at the time and always aiming to beat him (i think it only happenned a couple of times though...if that lol! ). In fact, i suspect i probably competed against Once More the year or year before he qualified for and won the Fox Final. I *think* that would have also been the year that Rob Hoekstra jumped a horse called V V S in the same final...having qualifed at your place....and around the same time that John Bunyan had a good horse called Findon Regal who qualified for National Grade C Final ? I was riding a horse called Super Nova at that time who also qualified for the Grade C...although we never actually contested the final due to lameness
Anyway, that was years and years ago...but well done on your more recent success
