Ok, the kennel club has come under a lot of fire recently and I've been one of the ones giving it but I got this e-mail just now:

Every dog deserves a healthy, happy life

Help us STOP irresponsible breeding!

Call on the government to apply the same basic principles which govern the Accredited Breeder Scheme, to the breeding of ALL dogs. The time has come for responsible dog breeders and lovers to stand together. Please sign our petition and show your support for dogs.

Looks like things might be on the up, combined with the BHS's new breeding scheme we might stop the "breed because they're cute/sweet culture"

OMG i cannot see how you can say this if the kennel club looked at home first they would find the easiest way to stop indiscrininate breeding is to stop accepting the registration and fees from owners who overproduce but they will not it will cost them too much they set standards on how many litters a bitch should produce a year but they will not refuse to register from bitches which are overbred or under age they know who the puppy farmers are but they still accept these litters for registration they prefer to charge again to join their accredited breeders scheme i for one would rather stop breeding

Totally agree with yeeharider. For years responsible breeders have been asking the KC to stop accepting registrations from people who are over producing, and to enforce minimum health checks but they were more interested in the money from registrations. I spoke to someone at Crufts about the Accredited Breeders scheme, I asked why they did not set a maximum hip score in GSDs, instead of just saying dogs should be hips scored. They trotted out the same old excuse that if they did this it would reduce the dogs available for breeding by responsible breeders and therefore would open the market to more back yard breeders

The Accredited Breeders scheme has, unfortunately, been proven not to work - a significant proportion of those who register for the scheme are over-producers (or dare I say, puppy farmers!) who use it to make themselves seem legitimate

The Kennel Club will have to do a hell of a lot more than this to gain any respect in my eyes

I agree with everything above and would rather not have to register with the kennel club in the first place but they have the monopoly if you want to show your dog you have to be registered I am a very selective breeder who only breeds when I want another puppy myself
