Congratulations to anyone who made it this far!!!!!!!! Now tell me all about your Kelpies and give me info on what I've let myself in for!!!!

We've got our 3rd dog show this weekend wonder if he'll manage to get me a 4th rosette, that would be nice

They are a very tough working breed!

They run along the backs of the sheep in the race to push them along. They are very good workers but never seem to tire! So how you have managed to get yours tired!

Looks a cracking dog. Well done on all your rosettes!

Lots of exercise is how we tire him out and yes you're right, a little rest and he's ready to go again!!! LOL!!!! He will play fetch for hours and hours and hours! Thats the easiest way to exercise him. Its taken us around 6 weeks to stop him herding the cows and the horse and now we just see him make the "look" and we know whats on his mind and say leave, wave his ball at him and he comes back to focus on us or more likely the ball!!!!!!!! The dog shows and long walks wear him out the most though! I keep him quite mentally active too varying his obedience practice tasks and lots and lots of toys in the garden.

Thanks for saying he "Looks a cracking dog" I fell in love with him from the first picture I saw of him! Although, he's supposed to be OH's dog!!!!

LOL!!!!!

I hope you won't take this the wrong way, they are both gorgeous dogs, but can I ask how you know they are Kelpie crosses if they are rescues?
Michelle your lad, looks like many smooth coated working sheepdogs you see round the welsh farms.
Ny Buffy wants to know how Milli stole her chicken

Kelpies are quite common in Wales and a lot of crossed are comming up for rescue. In their Native land they have to be really tough and so too are the sheep they work with, hence they can be a little full on especially when crosssed. SO that's probably why they end up in resuce as if they don't work the right way they get tied to a tree somewhere if they are lucky!!!

They are said to share some ancestry with Cattle dogs who have dingo in them so you should see Kelpie type and wrok ethic in a first cross much like a Husky. Here is a link to an AU site all about them

Millie has a stealth mode, and being black she is a whizz at sneak attacts for stealing rubber chickens

I didn't have a clue on the breed when we got her. I since we did everyone has an opinion on what breed she is cross, including lab and spaniel!!!

I bumped into someone at a terrier, lurcher show, from Scotland who has a farm and use Kelpies instead of Collies. She said she was definately a Kelpie cross, so thought I would do some research. It is very hard to work out with so many different looks to Keplies, but there some that look fairly similar, and found a book with a picture that was the spit of Millie, just a little bit more solid. Identical marking a face etc.

Very weird seeing Millie looking back at me from a book. Will see if I can get OH to scan the picture tomorrow after work.

Hi, I've just been told by the rescue society that we got him from that he's Kelpie cross, and since taking him out to shows I've had several comments of "oh wow you can see the Kelpie in him" before I've even mentioned his history!

He may well be crossed with a smooth coated sheep dog ??????????

I did do some reading about Kelpies when we were going through the adoption process and all the herding traits of a Kelpie are evident in Jack when he's attempting to herd the cows in our field and putting a stop to his natural instinct proves quite difficult at times!

Frankly, I don't care what breed he is, all I know is that we love him to bits!!!!!!

When we first got Jack a lot of people said he reminds me of a Dingo!!! OH was most put out about those kinds of comments!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

I am not really disputing the fact that they may be Kelpie crosses, I have a friend who does WT with a pure bred Kelpie and Jack does look very like him, I was just curious if the rescue centres actually had any proof of their parents. Its just a bit of a bugbear of mine how rescue kennels advertise dogs of unknown parentage as " X x Y crosses". They seem to do it a lot with my own breed (GSD) any prick eared black/tan dog immediately becomes a GSD cross, and yet could be anything. Some friends got one of these GSD x pups from a rescue at 8 weeks old, mum was a terrier and pup was black and tan, so therefore had to be crossed with a GSD
tongue.gif
She grew (but not very much) into a lovely little black and tan terrier, who they adore, but not quite what they expected to replace their old GSD

Again, really not getting at your 2 dogs, they are lovely.

I had a kelpie x heeler - collected her in Australia from her kelipe mum so I know she was...

They were bred in Oz as the border collie got too hot and too tired in the outback. They are called Kelpies as they all hail back to one bitch, called Kelpie. As in 'Thats one of Kelpies pups'. They are possilby not as clever as a border collie but can run more. They are very tough dogs. A lot of them bark while working.
Mine was lovely but very nervous. I chose the pup that hid under the table and wet itself when it saw humans! Generally they have the same problems as border collies, as in boredom leading to bad habits.
My OH out there had a dobermann x kelpie, he had the worst habits of both - it rounded you up and then guarded you!

Hello,
As a border collie and kelpie enthusiast, who likes slate-blue, I can confirm that your dog is in fact a pure-bred border collie. He is a colour known as slate blue, with tan markings. His white markings are mottled. He is smooth-haired and prick-eared. All characteristics of border collies. His initial nervousness is typical of 'lost' border collies. He doesnt have any characteristics associated with kelpies, they are generally much stockier. they have the pricked ears and tan markings but they dont have white markings apart from a small patch on the chest. A first generation cross with a kelpie would not have the full white markings associated with a border collie. It is possible with a second generation cross but as blue kelpies are rare in the UK, it is very unlikely. My email is kimpoulter@aol.com. I can supply you with photos of quite a few similar looking border collies. I hope this clears up the confusion.

what was that about blue kelpies?????

these 3 are all rescues and I know of another 2 blue rescue kelpies too
