Well thats my hay sorted ( and a question) ....

Hubbies uncle rang me up last night and asked me did I want hay made from the field we had for the horses , Bearing in mind horses havent been in the field for well over a month as they are at yo's fields and the grass is nice and green, no weeds/docking leaves/buttercups just pure grass . Hes decided to cut it for hay and has said to me to take the hay , Only thing I need to pay for his the baling and cutting of it

So question is, How many bales approx would you get from a 3 acre field ?

Depending on how well the grass has grown 250-300 bales. My farmer says you can usually get 100 bales an acre which has nearly worked each year for me.
I always start panicking once it has been cut and baled as I want them all in before it usually starts raining...back breaking work.
Last year I made 4ft haylege bales which was much more cost effective, and there wasn't the panic. I have 3 to feed and a 4ft bale lasts approx 10-12 days. Think each bale was £9.

It doesn't need to dry out quite so much as hay and as soon as its baled then the panic is over as its then waterproof. My bales were actually pretty dry, more like wrapped hay(hot spell). All the hard work was done by tractor and they could be stored outside. Will be doing it again this year.
