So owned my TB for over 3 and a half years and he did something very new and something that he has never done before!
We were out on a hack and walking through a field (with another horse and rider), when out of nowhere he got down on the floor, I jumped off, and he rolled onto his side and then got back up again! Carried on the hack without him doing again.

This was a first time experience for me and obviously a massive nono as it can be dangerous. I know how to prevent it from happening next time, but my question is why would he do this?

Like I said previously I've owned him for over 3 years and he has never done it, he wasn't sweaty and we had only been out for 5 minutes, thanks!

Lots of stockhorses love to lie down in the creek, particularly after a long hot day
You'll hear splashing and then a roar of despair"No No Stop it you little B******d".
Followed by a long soggy ride home.

My fell pony does this, the most embarrassing time was after hacking to a clinic in the rain arriving at a beautiful indoor arena, he decided now was the moment to dry himself off in the sand. The only advice I have is to kick like hell and hope for the best ?

Was he wet? There was a pony at the riding school I went to who would get down to roll if he got the slightest bit damp. It would always start with rubbing one back leg against the other so as soon as he did that, everybody would shout "get off'" at the rider. They learned to keep him dry at all costs but an unexpected shower would sometimes catch them out.

Years later, I was hacking out with a friend and her new horse. She was very nervous so had taken on an old horse, who was very quiet, on permanent loan. It started to rain and all of a sudden this new horse of hers started to rub one back leg against the other. Instinctively, I shouted at her to jump off. She did and seconds later, down he went on the road. It was the same horse! He had a slightly different name and was a grey who had gone completely white by the time he was with my friend so I never realised it was him until I saw that leg rubbing. She had been told about it and was happy to not ride in the rain but the shower was unexpected. She kept him for the rest of his life and only rode him on very dry days!
